The History of Afternoon Tea
The time-honoured tradition of Afternoon Tea started with a lady who was hungry. In 1840 Anna, the seventh Duchess of Bedford, felt a sinking feeling come late afternoon when the gap between lunch and dinner felt all too long. A friend of Queen Victoria, the Duchess began serving a small bite to eat alongside tea to her high society friends. The trend caught on and a ritual was born.
